18 Aug My Skin Care Routine
I have been down the path of really expensive skin cares. I have also been down the road of supermarket skin care products. There are many products out there that I personally think would be amazing and I would love to try. The thing is however just as you can’t out exercise a bad diet; you cannot out cream a bad diet! Every single cell in your body is built by the food that you eat which means that if you fill your body with food that causes oxidative stress on the inside then guess what that will do to the largest organ in your body, your skin….it will age faster!
Also, in order to get really good quality nutrients and antioxidants from your food which make your skin glow, you need to have a great healthy digestive system because it doesn’t matter how good your food is, if you aren’t eating right for your body and taking care of your gut health, your body cannot absorb and breakdown the foods that you eat.
So for me, the first place I start with my skin care routine is probiotics, fermented foods and foods that are right for my metabolic type so that my digestive tract is squeaky clean and works amazing. I eat as much leafy greens and foods packed full of antioxidants. I then eat loads of soups made from homemade broths. Broths are packed full of gelatin, collagen, chondroitin, glucosamine and other amazing minerals and vitamin that your body needs to produce amazing skin, bones and ligaments. Your body rebuilds and replaces its skin every 30 days so provide it with the foundation to build amazing skin!
Oil cleansing is a traditional way of cleansing your face. You see, likes dissolve likes so oil dissolves oil. In order to declog your pores and moisturize your face you shouldn’t use face washes and foamy substances because not only do they affect the Ph levels of the skin, many are also full of chemicals and cost you a lot of money.
Castor oil is the first oil I use in this regime. Castor oil is renowned for its treatment in wounds and dry skin. It is a holistic medicine. It is very strong and when applied to the skin it has anti-inflammatory properties. The use of the castor oil is for cleansing. I dilute the oil down in a carrier oil which is usually what I have in the house and this can either be olive oil, coconut oil (you would need to melt it to mix) or almond oil.
You then use either coconut oil or Jojoba oil for moisturizing. Jojoba oil is a wax and it is very similar to the structure of our own skin. It creates a perfect balance on your skin, so your skin won’t over or under produce oil when it has jojoba on it.
Coconut oil is a more intense moisturizer containing lauric acids which is known for having great benefits for the skin and hair. Both these oils have anti-microbial properties, so they really help stop any bad bacteria in its path.
- In a jar mix 1 part castor oil to 2 parts carrier oil. Mix together really well.
- Before bed, massage generous amounts of the oil onto your skin and keep massaging for around 2 minutes.
- Then apply a warm washcloth and place it over your face to allow it to steam the pores open. I hold it there and repeat a few times, approximately a couple of minutes.
- Apply oil again, steam again and then wipe the remaining oil off your face.
- Pat your skin dry and put a thin layer of either coconut oil or jojoba oil on your skin.
At the moment after this routine, I then place on this really yummy mix of 1/2 coconut oil and 1/2 olive oil, with drops of lavender oil in it. It smells amazing and when this is on my face, it just makes me relax and sleep amazing!
In the morning, I use a warm water and a flannel and gently wash my face. I then put on jojoba oil on my skin for the day. If I am wearing make up I would do this sooner to allow it to dry on my skin but if I don’t have time, I would then just use a towel and pop it on my face to just remove any residue jojoba oil so make up can go on easily.
Before Sun Care
Coconut oil, I use coconut oil on my body everyday. I also make up very often a mix of coconut oil and olive oil and use essential oils to make it smell amazing. My favorites are orange essence mixed with vanilla or rose and vanilla. So yummy!!
Plus, coconut oil has been used as an effective sunscreen for thousands of years by indigenous, pacific islanders. It has a natural SPF 4!
If you don’t trust it as a stand alone sun care, you can make up this delicious sun cream lotion.
- 1/2 cup almond or olive oil (can infuse with herbs first if desired)
- 1/4 cup coconut oil
- 1/4 cup beeswax
- 2 Tablespoons Zinc Oxide. This makes a natural SPF of 20+
- Optional: Essential Oils, Vanilla Extract or other natural extracts to suit your preference
After Sun Care
More coconut oil or maybe one of my homemade body butters. Depends if I have any made!
Glowing Skin Routine
Epsom salts are something that helps your body naturally draw out toxins and helps relieve any sore muscles. So when I feel like my skin needs a good spruce up, I use epsom salts. You can do this in the bath or shower. All you do is scrub your entire body with the salts. I don’t do it on my face but the rest of the body. If you are doing this in the bath and you then soak in it for a while not only will your skin glow but your will be helping your body naturally detoxify. Epsom salts have amazing powers, you can read up on them here. I would then use either coconut oil or homemade body butter afterwards.
This is something that is amazing for blood flow, improving detoxification, removing dead skin cells, and just making your skin glow. All you need is one of those body brushes and before you hop in the shower brush your entire body with it. It feels unreal and will really lift your energy. Great to do daily!
