14 Jul Rocket Fuel Green Smoothie
I have got a whole lot of leafy greens in my garden at the moment, which is great for smoothies. However because the leaves are quite old (larger plants) I always make sure I blanch them especially kale and older spinach leaves. I do this by either popping them on the stove and bringing to a boil, or covering with some boiling water and letting it sit for 2-3 minutes. I am one of those people who get quite badly effected by the oxalates in really dark older leaves of raw kale, so the blanching removes the majority of it, meaning I can get all the powerful nutrients that these veges has to offer.
Then when it comes to my fruit I have been going with green apple as an option, however banana also works great also and is going to make for a sweeter smoothie. If you are someone who likes it a bit sweeter use both fruits as the avocado in all the other vegetables will ensure you don’t get a big sugar spike.
Makes heaps, so store in a glass jar in the fridge and drink within 24 hours.
2 stalks celery
3-4 cups blanched kale/spinach
Juice from a lemon
1 tablespoon chia seeds
1 tablespoon flaxseeds
4 soaked brazil nuts
Optional – spirulina powder
Pop it all into the blender, top up with water and blitz up until smooth.
