20 Feb 8 Signs You’re Not As Healthy As You Think You Are
I often talk about a scale of wellness with my clients and ask them how they feel. In many cases they say they feel normal, but not 100%. Here’s where the problem lies. I believe we get confused as to what is wellness and what is normal. What we refer to as ‘normal’ these days is getting around at about 50% of your capacity. Catching colds in winter, struggling with hay fever in the summer and dragging ourselves out of bed each and every day exhausted is being considered ‘normal’. That might be the case and you don’t have much to complain about, but you could certainly feel better. Maybe you aren’t someone who gets sick or troubled by cold and flus, but there is just something not quite right, but you feel it’s really not worth worrying about.
So today I thought I would help you discover if there is room for improvement. If you can improve things in your health so instead of feeling ‘normal’ you can start to create wellness and thrive.
8 Signs You’re Not As Healthy As You Think You Are
1. Each Day You Struggle With Energy
It is completely acceptable to have days every now and then were you are tired or it’s a real struggle to get up in the morning. Sometimes we do get tired because we have overdone it or we have just had a bad night’s sleep. But if this occurs day in and day out, it’s worth taking notice. Maybe it’s time to address your lifestyle. Perhaps you are doing too much or not getting enough down time throughout your week. Maybe it’s time to look at your diet. Are you eating foods that are right for you and are you getting the right balance of carbs, fats and proteins into your day? It could be that you are simply not putting enough emphasis on the power sleep pays in your life?
2. You Have Poor Sleep
We totally underestimate the power of sleep and how it can be so valuable in creating real health. You simple can’t create a healthy body without adequate recovery and repair. So putting emphasis on your sleep, how you sleep and how you prepare for sleep is a crucial step if you want to make positive changes to your wellbeing. If you struggle with poor sleep maybe it’s time to look at what you are eating before bed, make sure you remove all electronics from your room and ensure you are sleeping in a black cave. Perhaps you need to look at creating a routine in the evening away from computer screens, TVs and other electronics that can effect cortisol balance.
3. You Find It Hard To Get Out Of Bed
Our body works in natural rhythms and in the morning as the sun comes up so too does a natural spike in your cortisol levels. Throughout your day cortisol follows a bell curve and then comes back down again in the evening. So with a healthy cortisol rhythm your body should wake with the sun and have energy. If you struggle to get out of bed and feel groggy in the mornings this can be a sign of poor cortisol rhythm. If this is the case for you, it could be time you put some effort into taking care of what you are eating, the caffeine you are consuming, the time you are going to bed and how you are moving your body throughout the day.
4. You are constantly dealing with niggling injuries or joint pains
A human being is designed to be resilient. Our bodies are built tough and built to withstand pressures. However, when you train too much, eat poorly, sleep inadequately and generally lack overall care for your body, its resilience will dwindle. If this sounds like you and you are constantly dealing with annoying little issues like being injured or experience niggling joint pain, it could be time to listen to your body and start taking proper care of it. Remember you only have one!
5. You Have Poor Skin
Whether it’s acne, dermatitis or some other sort of skin rash it’s important to know that these are symptoms and signs of an underlying issue. More often than not, it is a sign of poor gut and digestive health. So instead of putting creams and potions on like a Band-Aid, maybe it’s time to address what’s really going on in your body and use this as a message to begin to take better care of it.
6. You have dark circles under your eyes
We all get tired and as soon as I am tired my eyes show it. But if you constantly have dark circles under your eyes it’s important to know that this is an indication of an underlying problem. This could be due to many things from a food intolerance to a congested liver. The place to start address these issue is your diet. Clean it up, remove processed foods and ensure you are drinking and eating good quality fresh produce along with plenty of water. Ditch the caffeine and alcohol and provide your body with nourishing nutrients to help it naturally detoxify. Including plenty of green leafy vegetables is a perfect place to start.
7. You Get Terrible Gas
Some gas is okay every now and then, but potent stinky farts every single day is a sign something deeper is going on. Maybe you experience bloating, stomach pains or diarrhea along with it. The truth is, it’s time to look at your digestive health, time to clean up your diet and eliminate problematic foods. Gas can indicate an imbalance in gut flora, leaky gut and/or poor digestive health. If this sounds like you, then it is time to work on improving your digestive health and begin eating foods to help you restore and replenish your gut flora.
8. You Don’t Have Regular Monthly Cycles
The female body works in regular cycles, this cycle can be affected by a number of thing and all to often it is due to stress affecting your cortisol regulation, which then in turn can affect your other hormones. The key is to find out what is causing that stress, maybe you are to lean for what your body requires, maybe your training to hard, maybe your food is out of balance or maybe its time to address what you are putting in and on your body. Our body is a system of systems and in order to have a balanced healthy hormonal system we need to have balance in our lives to.
This list could go on and I guess my point is that I don’t want you to simple feel ‘normal’. I want you to thrive. I want you to have optimal health and wellness. So if you are experiencing some of these issues maybe it is time to step things up a notch and start to really take care of your body.
