Breakfast Crunch

This Breakfast Crunch is a great mix to have on hand for breakfast or an afternoon snack. I love these jars, they are the coconut oil jars, I have a selection of them now in my pantry. They are currently mostly empty, so need to come up with great things to prepare and pop into them. This is one of those things. Remember it is all about being prepared. Read More→

Bircher Quinoa Muesli

This breakfast is for those who love porridge but are having problems with digestion  of oats, or for those who just want to try something new. Packed full of protein and because quinoa is a seed, this breakfast is great for those wanting to avoid gluten and grains. Soaking over night makes the quinoa easily digestable and less likely to cause any digestive problems. Also makes absorption of minerals and vitamins easier. I then cooked it to make it more digestible. Bircher muesli doesn’t need to be cooked, so you can decide if you want to go this extra step or not.

How to make Sauerkraut and Fermented Carrots

Fermented vegetables are not only good for you because they contain beneficial bacteria for good digestion, they are also a fantastic way to make your vegetables go further and last longer.

Right now cabbage is really cheap and the vege garden is overflowing with them, so this means it’s time to do something about it. I had never made sauerkraut before, but got into it last year, and try to have some each day. I find supermarket bought sauerkraut pretty yuk, so tried my hand at making my own.

I was incredibly surprised at how simple it is!

Healing Bone Broth

Check out my post I did on bone broths and why they are so good for you. This is a very simple recipe, if you don’t have vinegar don’t panic, this just helps soften the bones and helps to pull out the minerals into the broth. I got these bones from Countdown supermarket, it was $3.50 for a kg I think. There was still a lot of meat left on the bones, so we got a few meals out of the meat and then the broth lasts a long time. You can freeze it if you wish.

I have some every day, great in the afternoon before starting to cook dinner.  I freeze it in cup sizes so I can just pull some out whenever. If there is none at the supermarket, just ask the butcher for some either at the deli or your local butcher.  Read More→

Snack bar Recipe

Sometimes we need something super easy to pack up and take away with us. These snack bars are convenient and easy to eat. I have been having scroggin for snacks recently but find I leave a trail behind me of crumbs whenever I do eat it, so thought it was time to make this scroggin into a convenient crumb-free bar.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups dates
  • 1/2 cup apricots
  • 3 cups seeds I used pumpkin and sunflower seeds
  • 1 cup of shredded coconut
  • 3 tablespoons of coconut oil

Instructions

  1. Put all ingredients into blender in small amounts and blitz up, then transfer to a bowl. I did one cup at a time because I have a fairly gutless blender.
  2. Once all ingredients have been chopped, mix them together in bowl using hands.
  3. Melt oil/butter and pour over mixture, use hands to combine.
  4. Line a baking tin with baking paper and press mixture into tin firmly.
  5. Cover and place in fridge. Then chop into bars and you can freeze.

This is a recipe that you can have a play around with different ingredients. You can add more dates for more stickiness, or more butter for more ‘glue’. I found this amount worked well, but do experiment and make your own version.
