Why are vegetable oils not so good for us? What are the good oils that we should be consuming? Vegetable oils are polyunsaturated fats which means when they are heated they go rancid. They get oxidated and they can also become quite damaging inside the body.
Why are Vegetable Oils not Good For You?
Oils are supposed to be only heated to certain temperature and each of them are quite different from one another. Saturated fats are oils that can be heated such as your butter, coconut oil, and animal fats. They don’t get damage when it comes to heat, thus, they don’t cause harm inside us and they are good for us. The types of oil that do get damage with heat are your canola oil, corn oil, sunflower oil, ricebran oil and vegetable mix oil. When they get heated they become very rancid. They get oxidated molecules and cause stress inside your body.
Omega 3 VS Omega 6
The other thing for you to be really aware of is your omega 6 and omega 3 oils. We are a population that is consuming way too much omega 6 in our diet. We need to make sure that we got a balance of omega 6 to omega 3; 1:1 is a good balance but ideally you wanted to aim for 4:1 in terms of your omega 3 and omega 6 or even great ratio, especially if you have any sort of inflammation. If you are eating a diet which is high in grains and carbohydrate plus you are consuming lots of omega 6 coming from your trans fat and vegetable oils this will cause lots of oxidated stress in your body. Omega 3 brings down inflammation like joint pains and skin problems. They also decrease oxidated stress in the body and help your body to repair and recover. That is why you need to make sure that you’ve got good ratios of your omega 3 and omega 6. Omega 6 is good if it isn’t racid and coming in right sources so you really need a balance of that with your omega 3 that comes from fish oils, animal fats and also some nuts and vegetables. Always see to it that you are getting good amount of omega 3 in your diet and try to avoid too much omega 6.
What is the Recommended Type of Oil for Cooking?
Now after all that was discussed about omega 3, you might be wondering what sort of oil I should be using. You’ve got the best oils that you can have in your kitchen like coconut oils, olive oils, avocado oils, and butter. Your coconut oil and butter can be heated to high temperature. They are fantastic oil which you can put in your pan for frying. These are fantastic as they stay really stable under heat. When it comes to cold oils you can use your avocado oil or olive oil for your dressings and sauces and things like that. But then you can also start to explore if you want to be creative in your cooking, you can use like ghee or duck fat for your cooking as well. These all stay really stable and these have been used for thousands of years for cooking. These are the types of oils that are really good for us in which your body can utilize.
Understanding what oils are good for you and what oils to use where is really important. We are trying to avoid those really unstable laboratory made oils in your vegetables blend oils that get marketed to us. It may be called vegetable oil but it is a combination of different ingredients like canola oil, soy bean oil, and rice bran oil. All of those things are really high in omega 6. All have been treated, thus, they are all very unstable oils when it comes to heat. This where we really need to pay big attention to oil in terms of its heat and what it contains. Make sure you are getting the right oils in your diet so you get the benefits of it. Consuming enough fat is really good for us so also make sure you are getting enough good quality fat in your diet. Remember, you might have a really good quality fat but if is heated and treated the wrong way it is still not beneficial to you so take particular attention to your oils.
